Hemp Clothing: Benefits, Care, and Why Farmers Love It
Hemp has been spun into fabric for thousands of years. We grow hemp on our USDA Organic farm in Wilmore, Kentucky, and we get questions about hemp clothing from CBD customers. We don't sell hemp shirts or hemp jeans. We grow the plant the fiber comes from, so we'll walk through what hemp clothing actually is, how it's made, what it feels like, and how to take care of it.
Benefits of Hemp Clothing
Most of what makes hemp work as fabric comes from the plant's biology. We see it in the field every season.
Breathability and Moisture-Wicking
Hemp fiber is hollow. That structure pulls moisture off the skin and lets air move through the fabric, so a hemp shirt tends to feel cooler in summer heat than a tighter-knit cotton shirt of the same weight. Hemp also dries quickly once wet, which is part of why hemp canvas was the historical fabric of choice for ship sails.
Durability and Strength Compared to Cotton
Hemp fibers are roughly three times stronger than cotton fibers by tensile measurement, and they resist abrasion better. A hemp shirt washed and worn for three years usually still holds its shape, while the same workload on a cotton shirt thins it out and warps the collar. We see the same toughness in the field. Our hemp stalks survive hard summer storms that flatten softer crops nearby.
Natural UV Protection
Hemp fabric blocks a higher percentage of UV rays than most untreated cotton or synthetic fabrics. The dense weave and thick fiber walls do most of the work. If you spend long days outdoors, that's a real practical benefit, and it's one no one had to engineer into the fabric.
Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Production
Hemp is one of the easier cash crops we grow, and that translates to a smaller environmental footprint at the farm level. Our hemp uses roughly half the water cotton uses over a comparable growing window. We don't spray synthetic pesticides on our USDA Organic hemp, and frankly we don't need to. Hemp's height and dense canopy shade out most weeds, and its natural compounds repel a lot of common pests. Hemp roots reach deep, which helps loosen and aerate soil instead of stripping it. We rotate our hemp ground every season and the soil keeps getting better, not worse.
Hemp vs. Cotton: A Side-by-Side Comparison
Both fibers have their place. Cotton is softer right out of the bag and is easier to dye. But on the metrics most buyers actually care about, hemp wins.
- Strength: Hemp fiber is about 3x stronger than cotton fiber by tensile testing
- Water use: Hemp typically uses around half the water cotton uses per pound of fiber
- Pesticide need: Hemp is naturally pest-resistant; cotton is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops grown in the U.S.
- Lifespan: A hemp garment, washed and worn weekly, often lasts two to three times longer than the same-weight cotton equivalent
- UV resistance: Hemp blocks more UV out of the bag than untreated cotton
- Initial softness: Cotton wins on day one; hemp softens with each wash
- Breathability: Both breathe well; hemp wicks moisture more aggressively because of its hollow fiber
If your decision is "buy a shirt I'll wear two summers and toss," cotton is fine. If you want a shirt that gets better over five years, hemp is the better material.
Is Hemp Clothing Comfortable?
The honest answer is yes, with a small caveat. The first time you wear a 100% hemp garment fresh out of the package, it feels closer to linen than to a worn-in cotton tee. Some people love that texture immediately. Others take a couple of washes to come around to it.
Hemp softens with use. Each wash relaxes the fibers. By the tenth wear, a hemp shirt sits on the body the way a broken-in pair of jeans does, with shape and drape that cotton garments tend to lose long before. Most modern hemp clothing is also blended (often with organic cotton or a small percentage of TENCEL), which gives you hemp's durability with a softer first impression. If you've never tried hemp clothing, a hemp/cotton blend is usually the easiest entry point.
How Hemp Clothing Is Made
This is the part of hemp clothing most retailers skip, but it's the part we actually know. Here's the path from plant to fabric in plain language.
The plant grows. Textile-grade hemp is cut close to the ground after about 100 to 120 days, when the stalks are tall and the fiber is at peak length. Cutting too late makes the fiber stiff and brittle.
The stalks go through retting. That's a controlled rot that loosens the bast fibers from the woody inner core. Field retting, which leaves the cut stalks on the ground for a couple of weeks while dew, microbes, and light do the work, is the traditional method. Some processors use water retting in tanks instead. Both work; the choice usually comes down to climate and water access.
Decortication separates the long bast fibers from the woody hurd. Older mills used hand-fed roller systems; modern mills strip thousands of pounds of stalk an hour. The hurd becomes animal bedding, hempcrete, or biomass, and the bast fibers move on to spinning.
Spinning twists those fibers into yarn. Weaving or knitting turns the yarn into fabric. Then the fabric is dyed and sewn into a finished garment. If you've ever held a hemp shirt and noticed more texture than cotton, you're feeling the natural irregularity of those bast fibers, the same texture that's been there since the stalks came off the field.
How to Care for Hemp Clothes
Hemp is forgiving, but a few habits will get you a longer-lasting garment.
Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. Hot water and aggressive agitation can prematurely soften and weaken the fiber. Skip the bleach: chlorine breaks down hemp faster than cotton. A standard mild detergent is fine.
For drying, hang dry whenever you can. If you use a dryer, use the low or medium heat setting and pull the garment out while it's still slightly damp. High heat is the most common cause of hemp fabric shrinkage and fiber damage. Stretch and shape the garment back to size while it air-dries the rest of the way.
Hemp doesn't need much ironing. If a piece needs a press, use medium heat with a damp cloth between the iron and the fabric.
Treated this way, a good hemp shirt commonly outlasts three or four cotton equivalents bought over the same window.
