Durability and Longevity

Hemp fiber is one of the strongest plant fibers known. It's often cited as 2 to 3 times stronger than cotton on a like-for-like basis. The cloth resists abrasion, holds its shape, and outlasts cotton equivalents by years. A hemp canvas work jacket gets handed down. A cotton equivalent wears out at the elbows.

Breathability and Moisture-Wicking

Hemp fiber is hollow at the cellular level, which gives the woven cloth high air permeability. It also wicks moisture off the skin and dries fast. That's why hemp summer shirts keep you cooler than synthetic equivalents and don't hold sweat the way cotton does.

Natural Antibacterial Properties

Hemp has natural resistance to mold, mildew, and bacterial growth. Sailors used hemp ropes and hemp sails for centuries because the fiber held up in salt water and damp holds where cotton rotted. The same property keeps hemp socks and undershirts from getting funky as fast as cotton ones.

Cotton is one of the most water-intensive crops in commercial agriculture, especially conventional cotton in arid regions. Hemp is often cited as requiring significantly less water per pound of fiber, partly because it grows fast and partly because it pulls deep with a strong taproot.

Cotton also leans heavily on synthetic pesticides. The crop accounts for an outsized share of global pesticide use relative to its planted acreage. Hemp grows well without them. The plant's own biochemistry deters most insect pressure, and a healthy hemp stand shades out weeds before they take hold.

Durability Over Time

A hemp shirt and a cotton shirt look similar on the rack. Five years later, they don't. Hemp fiber's higher tensile strength means the woven cloth resists pilling, abrasion, and seam blowout. Cotton softens and weakens. Hemp softens with wear, like denim, while staying strong.

Softness and Feel

This is where cotton wins on day one. New hemp fabric, especially canvas-weight, feels stiffer than new cotton. The difference fades. After 20 to 30 washes, hemp breaks in to a soft hand that many wearers prefer to broken-in cotton. Modern hemp blends and finer hemp linens come off the rack much softer than the hemp clothing of 20 years ago.

Water Requirements vs. Conventional Cotton

Hemp is typically grown rainfed in temperate climates, including across most of the U.S. hemp belt. Cotton grown in places like the San Joaquin Valley or parts of Pakistan often relies on heavy irrigation. The water gap between the two crops is one of the most consistent points raised by textile sustainability researchers, even though exact figures vary by region and growing method.

No Pesticides or Herbicides Needed

Most fiber hemp is grown without synthetic pesticides because the crop doesn't need them. Our farm runs USDA Organic, so synthetic pesticides aren't allowed on any of our acreage anyway. The hemp plant's natural pest resistance is one of the reasons we chose it as a crop.

Soil Improvement

Hemp's root system reaches deep, which loosens compacted soil and pulls nutrients up from below the topsoil. Hemp is often used as a rotation crop because it leaves the field in better shape than it found it. Some U.S. farms grow hemp in rotation with grain or vegetables specifically for the soil benefit.

Types of Hemp Fabric and Their Uses

Not all hemp fabric is the same. The end use depends on the weave, the weight, and whether the fiber is blended.

Hemp Canvas

Heavy-weight, tight weave. Used for work jackets, tote bags, shoes, sailcloth, and tarps. Hemp canvas is the original heavy-duty hemp textile, used on sailing ships, covered wagons, and military gear long before synthetic fibers existed.

Hemp Linen

Lighter weight, finer weave. Used for shirts, dresses, sheets, and tablecloths. Hemp linen is what most people picture when they think of hemp clothing. It's similar in feel to flax linen, with a slightly more textured hand.

Hemp-Cotton Blends

A common compromise. A 55% hemp / 45% cotton blend keeps the strength and breathability of hemp while softening the day-one hand. Most affordable hemp T-shirts and casual wear use a blend. Pure hemp is heavier and pricier, but it's worth it for items meant to last.

How to Care for Hemp Clothing and Textiles

Hemp clothing is forgiving, but a few habits will keep it looking good for years.

Wash cold or warm, never hot. Hemp fiber tolerates heat better than wool, but hot water and high-heat drying speed up wear and can shrink loose-weave hemp. Tumble dry low or hang dry. Hemp dries fast on a line.

Skip fabric softener. The waxy coating it leaves dulls hemp's natural breathability and traps odor over time. A standard mild detergent is enough. Vinegar in the rinse occasionally helps strip mineral buildup from hard water.

Iron on medium heat with steam if you want a crisp shirt. Hemp wrinkles, like linen does, and most owners just live with it. The fiber softens further with every wash, so the older a hemp shirt gets, the better it feels.

Stains come out easily because hemp doesn't hold onto oils the way cotton does. Treat the spot before the wash and the cloth usually returns to clean.
