We make both. That's worth saying upfront, because most brands writing this comparison only sell one side of it.
Wholesale Hemp Farms is a USDA Organic hemp farm in Wilmore, Kentucky. We've been growing and producing CBD products since 2018, and we added functional mushroom gummies to our lineup because our customers kept asking for a trusted source. So when someone messages us asking which one to buy, mushroom gummies or CBD gummies, we're not steering them toward whichever product happens to be in our catalog. Both are. Here's our honest take on when to reach for each.
What Are Functional Mushroom Gummies?
Functional mushroom gummies are chewable supplements made with extracts from specific mushroom species that have been used in traditional wellness practices for centuries. They aren't psychedelic. They aren't the white buttons from the grocery store either. They're a narrow category of fungi valued for what they may support in the body: focus, immunity, stress response, stamina, and sleep.
The gummy itself is just a delivery method. The real work comes from the mushroom extract inside.
Key Mushroom Types
Most functional mushroom products build around a handful of species. Each one has a different traditional use and a different set of active compounds behind it.
- Lion's Mane: Known for cognitive support. Users report clearer thinking during work, better recall, steadier focus, and fewer afternoon crashes. Our Brain Health Daily Mushroom Gummy uses a Lion's Mane extract.
- Reishi: Traditionally used as an adaptogen. It may help the body handle stress more evenly over time. Reishi is often taken in the evening because it's associated with calm and relaxation, not stimulation.
- Chaga: Rich in antioxidants. Traditionally used for immune support. Our Immune Support Daily Chaga Mushroom Gummy is built around chaga for daily immune reinforcement.
- Cordyceps: Associated with endurance and stamina. Athletes and active users often reach for cordyceps before a workout or a long day.
- Turkey Tail: One of the most studied functional mushrooms. Traditionally used for immune support and gut balance.
None of these are psychoactive. None will make you feel high. What they may do, based on both traditional use and a growing body of research, is quietly shift how the body handles stress, inflammation, energy, and immune response over weeks and months of consistent use.
How Functional Mushrooms Work (Adaptogens Explained)
Adaptogens are a class of natural compounds that help the body adapt to stress. Instead of acting like a stimulant or a sedative, an adaptogen nudges the body toward balance. If you're wired, it may calm you down. If you're dragging, it may lift you up. That's the theory, and it's backed by centuries of use in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine plus a growing body of modern research.
Most functional mushrooms are considered adaptogens. The beta-glucans and triterpenes they contain, along with other active compounds, interact with the immune system and the HPA axis (the body's stress-response system). They also influence inflammatory pathways throughout the body. Results build with consistency. Mushroom supplements aren't usually a same-afternoon effect. They're a daily-routine effect.
What Are CBD Gummies?
CBD gummies are chewable supplements made with cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating compound from the hemp plant. Hemp is legally defined as cannabis containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC, which is why hemp-derived CBD is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. Our CBD gummies are made from hemp grown on USDA Organic Kentucky farmland and third-party lab tested before they ship.
CBD works differently than functional mushrooms. It interacts with the endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors throughout your body that helps regulate mood, sleep, pain perception, appetite, and immune function. That's why CBD gets reached for in such a wide range of situations.
Full Spectrum vs Broad Spectrum vs Isolate in Gummies
Not all CBD gummies are the same. The three main categories:
- Full Spectrum: Contains CBD plus the other naturally occurring cannabinoids and terpenes in the hemp plant, including trace Delta-9 THC (under 0.3%, Farm Bill compliant). Many users feel full spectrum is more effective because of the "entourage effect," the idea that hemp compounds work better together than alone. Read more in our guide to full spectrum CBD.
- Broad Spectrum: Contains most of the hemp compounds and terpenes but has had THC removed. A middle-ground option for users who want entourage benefits without any THC.
- Isolate: Pure CBD with everything else stripped out. Zero THC, zero other cannabinoids. Often the choice for people who are drug-tested at work or who want a single compound only.
Which one matters depends on what you're after. For most D2C buyers, full spectrum or broad spectrum tends to hit harder. For people in sensitive work situations, isolate is the safer pick.
How CBD Works (The Endocannabinoid System)
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a regulatory network your body makes and uses on its own. It produces its own cannabinoids (called endocannabinoids), and CBD is one of the plant-based cannabinoids that interacts with it.
CB1 receptors are concentrated in the brain and nervous system. CB2 receptors are concentrated in the immune system and peripheral tissues. CBD doesn't bind directly to either receptor the way THC binds to CB1, which is why CBD isn't intoxicating. Instead, it modulates how those receptors respond, and it influences other pathways involved in serotonin signaling, pain perception, and inflammation.
In practical terms, users report that CBD may help with acute stress, occasional sleep trouble, post-workout recovery, and general relaxation. CBD acts as a regulator rather than a stimulant or a sedative.
Mushroom Gummies vs CBD Gummies: Head-to-Head Comparison

Both products do useful things. They don't do the same useful things. Here's how they compare across the most common reasons people buy either one.
For Focus and Mental Clarity
Lean mushroom. Lion's Mane is the functional mushroom most associated with cognitive support. Users report clearer thinking during work, better recall, and steadier focus across the day. CBD can help remove the mental static that comes from stress, but it isn't a direct cognitive booster. If your goal is "I want to think sharper," a Lion's Mane gummy is the more targeted pick.
For Relaxation and Stress Relief
It depends on the time frame. For sudden, acute stress (a tough meeting or an anxious afternoon), CBD gummies tend to work faster and more directly. For long-term stress resilience, the kind of quiet wear-down from always being "on," adaptogenic mushrooms like reishi may help the body manage stress better over weeks of use. Many of our customers take both for exactly this reason.
For Sleep Support
Lean CBD. CBD gummies, especially formulas built for sleep, are the more direct option for occasional sleep trouble. Reishi may also help with relaxation at night and is used traditionally before bed, but CBD is the bigger lever here.
For Immune Support
Lean mushroom. Chaga, turkey tail, and reishi are the classic immune-support functional mushrooms. CBD isn't known for direct immune support. Our Immune Support Daily Chaga Mushroom Gummy is built for this specific use case.
For Daily Wellness
Both work, and they stack well. Many of our customers take a functional mushroom gummy in the morning (Lion's Mane for focus or chaga for immune support) and a CBD gummy in the evening (for relaxation or sleep). Different pathways and different time windows. They stack cleanly.
Can You Take Mushroom Gummies and CBD Gummies Together?
Yes. Functional mushroom gummies and CBD gummies work through completely different pathways. Functional mushrooms act on the immune system, the HPA axis, and other adaptogenic targets. CBD acts on the endocannabinoid system. There's no known interaction that would cause them to cancel each other out or cause a problem at label dose.
The split we see most often: morning mushroom, evening CBD. Lion's Mane or chaga at breakfast for focus and immunity. A CBD gummy after dinner or before bed for relaxation. Some customers do the reverse depending on schedule, and a few take both at the same time without issue.
Start with one. See how your body responds over a week or two at label dose. Then add the second if you want coverage on the other side. There's no rule that says both have to be taken every day, either. Many of our customers reach for mushroom gummies on workdays for focus and CBD gummies on weekends for recovery.
If you're on prescription medication or have a medical condition, check with your doctor before adding any new supplement.
How to Choose the Right Gummy for Your Goals
If you had to pick just one based on your primary goal:
- Sharper thinking, steadier focus: mushroom gummy with Lion's Mane.
- Faster stress relief or winding down at night: CBD gummy.
- Daily immune reinforcement: mushroom gummy with chaga, turkey tail, or reishi.
- Occasional sleep trouble: CBD gummy formulated for sleep.
- Endurance and stamina: mushroom gummy with cordyceps.
- Everyday baseline wellness: either one, or both stacked across the day.
If you're still torn, start with whichever lines up best with your most pressing goal. Give it two to four weeks at label dose. If you want to add the other, add it. Nothing says you have to pick a side.
What to Look for in Quality Gummies (Both Types)

The supplement industry has a quality-control problem. Not every gummy on the shelf has what the label claims. A few markers separate the real products from the filler.
Third-Party Testing
Every reputable gummy, mushroom or CBD, should publish a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an independent third-party lab. The COA should show potency (how much active compound the gummy actually contains), contaminant screening (pesticides, heavy metals, microbials), and for CBD gummies, THC content. All of our COAs are on our third-party lab tested page. If a brand can't show you a COA, that's your answer.
Ingredient Sourcing and Organic Certification
For CBD gummies, ask where the hemp is grown. Our hemp is grown on our USDA Organic Kentucky farm, the same farm that's run our operation since 2018. USDA Organic is a federal certification. It's a real audit of soil, inputs, process, and records, not a marketing label.
For mushroom gummies, two things matter: extract source (fruiting body vs mycelium) and extract concentration. Fruiting-body extracts are generally considered more potent, because that's the part of the mushroom with the highest concentration of active compounds. Also look for stated beta-glucan content when available.
Avoid products with artificial dyes, corn syrup as the first ingredient, or proprietary blends that don't disclose individual mushroom amounts.
