Step 1: Find Out If Your Doctor Is in a Participating Organization
Call your doctor's office and ask: "Is your practice part of an ACO REACH organization, the Enhancing Oncology Model, or the LEAD Model?" These are specific CMS Innovation Center program types. Your doctor may not know off the top of their head, the practice administrator or billing department will know. You can also check innovation.cms.gov for Innovation Center model participants.
Step 2: Ask Specifically About the CBD Benefit
Being in a qualifying organization type is necessary but not sufficient. The organization must also have specifically elected the Substance Access BEI benefit. Ask: "Has your organization signed up for the Substance Access BEI benefit that lets you provide CBD products to Medicare patients?" Two separate confirmations are needed. Many organizations are in qualifying program types but haven't yet elected this specific benefit.
Step 3: Your Doctor Evaluates Your Symptoms
If both answers are yes, your doctor evaluates whether CBD is appropriate for your health situation. They look at your symptoms, your current medications, and your overall health. This is a clinical judgment, not every patient automatically receives CBD products. Your doctor determines whether it makes sense for you specifically.
Step 4: Your Doctor Provides the Products Directly
If your doctor determines CBD is appropriate, their organization provides qualifying oral CBD products directly to you.
