Why Seniors Sleep Poorly

Sleep architecture genuinely changes with age. Older adults spend less time in deep slow-wave sleep, wake more often during the night, and frequently experience early morning awakening. About 50% of adults over 65 report chronic sleep problems. The consequences compound, poor sleep worsens pain perception, cognitive function, immune response, and mood.

Many conventional sleep aids carry risks that are amplified in seniors: benzodiazepines increase fall risk and cognitive impairment, Z-drugs (Ambien, Lunesta) have similar concerns. The search for safer options has driven many seniors toward CBD.

What Research Shows About CBD and Sleep

A 2019 large case series in The Permanente Journal followed adults taking CBD for anxiety and sleep. After one month, 66.7% reported improved sleep scores. A 2020 systematic review in Medicines analyzed randomized controlled trials involving cannabinoids and sleep and found most showed improvements in sleep quality measures. A a recent study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found CBD improved subjective sleep quality in adults with chronic pain.

Research suggests CBD may improve sleep by addressing what keeps people awake, pain, anxiety, and hyperarousal, rather than by directly inducing sedation like a sleeping pill. This indirect mechanism may be especially relevant for seniors whose sleep is disrupted by chronic pain or anxiety. See: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

How Medicare May Help Cover CBD for Sleep

Sleep disruption is among the conditions physicians can address through the Medicare CBD program. If your doctor is in an ACO REACH organization that has elected the Substance Access BEI benefit, they can evaluate whether CBD is appropriate for your sleep issues and provide qualifying oral products at no charge. Ask your doctor about their organization's participation.

How to Use CBD for Sleep

Most people take CBD 30-60 minutes before bed. Gummies take 30-90 minutes to absorb, take them earlier. Tinctures absorb faster sublingually (15-45 minutes). Start with a low dose (5-10mg) and adjust gradually. Give it 2-4 weeks of consistent nightly use before evaluating. Always tell your doctor you're using CBD, especially if you take other sleep or anxiety medications. Browse our oral CBD products.
